Finding a place to live in and around Margate is a challenge. Even lower-priced homes and apartments are expensive for many.
There are preliminary discussions among Margate leaders about providing affordable housing for first responders and other public service professionals, such as teachers.
During the August 20 meeting, Vice Mayor Antonio Arserio brought up the idea of housing units for first responders. He believes these units could provide comfortable housing for people who perform essential services for Margate.
Known as Cocogate, located at 5109 Coconut Creek Parkway, it is a proposed development that could feature 41 “hometown hero” units.
The project is still pending review and has not yet been scheduled for a development review committee meeting, according to public information officer Lisa Huriash.
