A 25-year-old man who died serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq will be honored by the City of Margate.
During the August 20 meeting, the commission approved a resolution supporting the designation of the bridge on State Road 7 over Sample Road as the “SPC Daniel J. Agami Bridge,” as approved in Florida House Bill 987. The name change was approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis on June 13, 2025, which allows the Department of Transportation to place street signs.
Daniel’s mother, Beth Agami, thanked the commission and described how he enjoyed attending school in Margate. Florida Representative Christine Hunschofsky and State Senator Tina Polsky filed the bill amendment for the renaming of the bridge, according to Lisa Huriash, public information officer for Margate.
Florida House Bill 987 was officially referred to as CS/CS/House Bill 987 – Transportation Facility Designations. The bill created several honorary designations of transportation facilities and directs the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to erect suitable markers, according to Shayna Cohen, senior legislative aide for Polsky.
Since the bridge is located in the area represented by Polsky and Hunschofsky, they were able to successfully advocate for its inclusion in the bill to receive a designation.
Local city governments, including Margate and Coconut Creek, which are areas impacted by the bridge, also need to pass local legislation in support of the bridge naming. FDOT will then complete any other needed administrative tasks to formally erect a marker. This is likely to be accompanied by a designation ceremony with local leadership and the Agami family, according to Cohen.
Army Specialist Agami of Coconut Creek was killed in action on June 21, 2007, at the age of 25, from injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Adhamiyah, Iraq. Agami began his education at the Hebrew Academy Community School in Margate, where he built the foundation of his strong Jewish identity and deep sense of service.
Agami completed his basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based in Schweinfurt, Germany. He was deployed to Iraq in 2006.
He received numerous honors for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Combat Infantryman’s Badge, according to city information.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano said it is important that Agami be honored for giving his life for the nation.
