Margate Police arrested the wanted owner of “Best Contractors USA” on a Broward warrant tied to an alleged $63,000 construction fraud and grand theft case.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Adelmo Luiz Fernandes, 68, of Fort Myers, was taken into custody on May 14 after an officer conducted a traffic stop near Southgate Boulevard and State Road 7. Investigators said the officer discovered Fernandes had an active Broward County felony warrant for second-degree grand theft.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the case stems from a January 2023 construction contract in Fort Lauderdale. Investigators allege that Fernandes and another man falsely represented themselves as licensed contractors for a company, unironically named Best Contractor Company USA, and persuaded a victim to sign a $125,500 construction agreement for work on two properties.
Authorities said the victim ultimately paid $63,640.13 through Zelle and other methods between January and September 2023. Records state construction work began but was not completed, failed inspections, and did not meet required building standards.
Investigators also allege no construction work was ever started at one of the properties despite payment being made.
The victim filed a complaint with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, according to the affidavit.
Fernandes was booked into the Broward Main Jail.
