New trees in Margate {David Volz}
The medians on Rock Island Road in Margate recently received an upgrade with the installation of about 130 shade and flowering trees.
The Rock Island Road Median Beautification Project involved installing approximately 130 shade and flowering trees, about 1,000 irrigation heads, and new sod along a 2-mile section of Rock Island Road between Holiday Springs Boulevard and Southgate Boulevard. According to Michael Jones, Director of Parks and Recreation, the trees provide visual beautification and act as a sound buffer.
“The trees make drives in Margate more pleasant. We will continue these improvements one median at a time. Many more medians are planned,” Jones said.
The total budget for the project was about $250,000, and Margate received a $100,000 reimbursement from a federal U.S. Forest Service grant, according to Lisa Huriash, public information officer.
