A Margate Police Department K-9 officer captured a man hiding after police say he fled from officers investigating multiple reports of suspicious men opening mailboxes.
According to an MPD arrest report, Marcus Handerson Georges, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested May 16 and faces charges including grand theft of a firearm, loitering or prowling, and resisting an officer without violence.
According to the affidavit, officers responded to the 6300 block of Southwest 2nd Street after a caller reported at least two men walking down the street opening mailboxes. An officer reportedly spotted two males and two females in the area before Georges allegedly took off running as officers arrived.
Police said Georges jumped a fence into a backyard near Southwest 2nd Street before a perimeter was established, and BSO Aviation assisted in the search.Â
Officers later located him concealed in bushes outside a home on Southgate Boulevard, where police said he ignored commands to show his hands and was apprehended by a K-9 unit.
Investigators said Georges discarded a backpack while fleeing. Inside, officers allegedly found a Glock 19 handgun with a 30-round magazine containing 23 rounds. A records check revealed the firearm had been reported stolen during a vehicle burglary in Fort Lauderdale, according to the affidavit.
Police also noted several open mailboxes in the area, though officers said Georges was not found carrying any mail.
Georges was transported to the Broward County Main Jail and later released after posting $2,000 bond.
