The Margate July 4th parade winners were honored during the July 10 commission meeting.
Parks and Recreation director Michael Jones presented the awards and expressed his satisfaction with this year’s parade turnout.
“We had many people building floats, and it was exciting,” he said.
Jeff and Vicki Bertram won the family category with a float that was an eagle on a jeep.
“The parade was great, and there was a big turnout. The parade generated much excitement, and we saw residents waving flags and having fun,” said Jeff.
Jeff said they began participating in the parades about 15 years ago and became more serious. They won first place in 2018, 2019, and 2020, which drove them to work hard to create a successful float this year.
The American Legion Post 157 won the non-profit category. They created a float with a birthday cake theme to celebrate America’s 248th birthday.
Tami Gordon, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the organization’s historian, said, “It was great to see the smiles on the kid’s faces and families having fun. We were super happy to win first place.”
According to Gordon, the American Legion won last year.
Family Knowledge Action Martial Arts won the private business category. Alexis Blasenheim, one of the summer camp directors and a martial arts instructor, loved participating in the parade.
“We had fun and loved seeing some of our former students on the parade route. Our volunteers and coaches walked in the parade, waved to people, and handed out candy,” said Blasenheim.
