Colin Ferels was honored as “Athlete of the Month” during the July 10 Margate city commission meeting.
Ferels, 10, is playing his first year for the Margate Recreation baseball team, the Triple AAA Rubber Ducks, which earned second place in its league.
“I like to pitch and have fun playing baseball,” he said.
His mother, Faith, is proud of her son and supports his interest in baseball. “He loves baseball, and he was honored for working hard to improve,” she said,
Colin began playing in 2020 and is developing skills as a pitcher, making vast improvements over the past year.
“I believe he won this award because of his hard work and positive attitude toward his team,” said Faith. “When Colin could not play in a game because of a sprained ankle, he cheered on the team and was considered a coach for the night by his coaches.
Jessica Gallagher Flynn, who has coached him in the past, told Margate Talk, “I’ve had the honor of watching, coaching, and cheering on this young man play and develop over the past few years in Margate.”
She continued, “He is such a sweet and respectable child and a wonderful selection for recognition. I look forward to continuing to watch him on the field and continue to develop his skills and his love and passion for the game and his teammates.”
On this night, Colin also led the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the meeting.
