Cordell Petersen {BSO}
A known burglary suspect was apprehended following a pursuit by the Margate Police Department and Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit that ended with his capture by K-9 officers.
According to Margate PD records, the incident occurred on May 26. It began when officers were notified via police radio that the suspect, identified as Cordell Petersen, 42, of North Lauderdale, was under mobile surveillance.
Records show that the Broward Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was called to assist. They quickly began providing real-time video surveillance from their helicopter to law enforcement in the area, attempting to locate Petersen on the ground.
According to the police report, BSO Aviation observed Petersen removing two rims and tires from a Honda sedan. As soon as this was confirmed, Coral Springs officers converged on the location using a fleet of unmarked and marked police vehicles.
Upon seeing the officers, Petersen reportedly fled the scene on foot, disregarding verbal commands to stop. He swam across the C14 canal and entered several residential backyards to evade capture.
Throughout the pursuit, BSO Aviation continued to provide updates to officers with K-9 dogs. Upon locating Petersen in a backyard, he ignored commands to come out but was eventually apprehended by K-9 officers hiding in a residence near the 7400 block of Southwest 1st Street.
Petersen was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
