I hope the school year has gotten off to a wonderful start for everyone! With the school year underway and the holidays approaching, this time of year can bring added stress and challenges for many people.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and a good time to talk to our family members and friends about suicide prevention. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you know someone who is struggling with their mental health, you can call 211 in Broward County (211-broward.org). Also, in Northwest Broward, we have wonderful organizations such as Eagles’ Haven Wellness Center (eagleshaven.org) that are there to help. Eagles’ Haven offers free wellness classes and has licensed clinicians on site to help people in crisis. They can also help connect individuals with the resources and services they need.
One of the most important opportunities we have as citizens is the right to vote. September 15, 2026 is National Voter Registration Day and a great time to register to vote, check your registration status, and confirm your vote-by-mail requests.
The deadline to register to vote for the November 3, 2026 election is October 5, 2026. Visit the Broward Supervisor of Elections website (BrowardVotes.gov) for information about registering and voting. With several races and constitutional amendments on the ballot this November, please make sure your voter registration is current and you are ready to vote.
September is also budget season, when local and county governments approve their annual budgets and final tax rates. The county and cities all have their budgets available online, and residents can participate in budget hearings and workshops – all open to the public – where these decisions will be discussed and voted on. If you want to know how much you can expect to pay in taxes for school board, county, city, hospital district, water management, and Children’s Services Council, you can visit the Broward County Property Appraisers website (bcpa.net). Search for your property, then click “TRIM Notice” on your property information page. The website also provides information about exemptions currently available to property owners. Additionally, you can view all your current and previous property tax bills on the Broward County Tax Collector site (browardtax.org/property-tax). Click “Pay Online,” enter your address, and you will be able to view your current amount due and property tax bill history dating back to 2014.
