After winning the State Championship a season ago, the North Broward Prep hockey team defeated Cypress Bay High School 5-0 to begin the year Monday Night.
Tristan Gagnon, Cole Rosen-Nossen, Bennett Rainone, Emilio Stabile, and Lucca Casacci all scored goals. Brian Pine recorded a pair of assists, while Rosen-Nossen, Aiden Moore, Rainone, Blake Stein, Casacci, and Cole Jovanovski all had one. Rutger Grady picked up a shutout in net.
The Eagles are coached by Jim Gabrione, a Boca Raton native who played four years of college hockey with Southern New Hampshire University. He has won two State Championships, including one during his first year as Head Coach of the Eagles in 2021. Gabrione took over for former NHL player Ray Sheppard, who is still on the staff working as an assistant coach.
Gabrione was impressed with his team in their opening game and felt their experience was a big factor, with roughly 70 percent of their team coming back.
“I think it really showed in our first game because we had so many returners in the lineup,” he said. “We would like to see some improvements on some team aspect type stuff. We juggled around some lines to try and find the right combinations.”
Next, the Eagles will play the Westside Mutts on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Florida Panthers Ice Den.
