Margate has a new Chabad rabbi — and a new Chabad center — with plans to broaden the Jewish community’s opportunities for worship, study, and connection.
Rabbi Mendel Denburg and his wife, Chaya, recently moved to the city from Brooklyn, New York, to establish the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Margate.
“We’re here to serve the Jewish community in whatever way possible,” Rabbi Denburg said. “Chabad is for every Jew, regardless of affiliation. We want to create a warm and welcoming environment where people feel comfortable exploring Judaism.”
The couple plans to offer Shabbat services, adult education classes, children’s programs, and holiday celebrations. They aim for the new community center to be “an address for everything Jewish,” said Rabbi Denburg, younger brother of Chabad Jewish Center of Coral Springs Rabbi Yankie Denburg.
Chabad-Lubavitch is an international movement that dispatches rabbis and their families—known as shluchim—to communities worldwide. With the Denburgs’ arrival, Margate joins hundreds of other towns and cities with a Chabad presence.
Rabbi Denburg, born and raised in Coral Springs, and Chaya Denburg, originally from Brooklyn, bring years of experience in Jewish outreach, having led programs both in the U.S. and Israel.
The Denburgs said they have begun meeting with local residents and business owners in Margate. It’s been about 20 years since the city had its own Chabad.
“We’re excited to be here and look forward to building Jewish life in Margate,” Rabbi Denburg said.
Chabad of Margate will launch with full High Holiday services and a Rosh Hashanah community dinner, Sept. 22–24 and Oct. 1–2. All local Jewish residents are invited to participate.
For more information and to receive the location for services and the dinner, contact Rabbi Denburg at 561-400-8413 or Margatechabad@gmail.com.
