It was a busy and competitive week for Monarch High School athletics, highlighted by two wrestlers competing in the state championships.
The Knights were represented at the Silver Spurs Arena during the state tournament held at Osceola Heritage Park. Diddier Carillo Castillo placed fourth after advancing to the quarterfinals before losing a tight match in overtime. Impressively, he did not allow a single takedown throughout the entire tournament.
Tyler Metellus also had a strong showing, finishing seventh after dropping a close quarterfinal match to the eventual runner-up. Metellus is now a two-time state placer for the Knights.
On the baseball diamond, Monarch dropped its fifth straight game, falling 11-4 to Cooper City High School in its lone matchup of the week. The Knights trailed 5-0 before rallying with four runs in the fourth inning, but Cooper City responded with six more runs to secure the victory. Monarch fell to 3-10 on the season. Tyler Perez and Yamil Alba each drove in a run, while five different pitchers appeared on the mound.
The softball team went 1-2 during the week. Monarch first dropped an 18-10 decision to St. John’s School before bouncing back with a 12-7 victory over Calvary Christian Academy. Jayden Uzzo led the way offensively, hitting a home run and driving in five runs to help secure the Knights’ third win of the season. Monarch later lost a close 5-4 game to Pompano Beach High School.
The boys’ volleyball team split its matches during the week. Monarch fell to Deerfield Beach High School 32-30, 25-18, 25-20 in its first match before bouncing back with a four-set victory over Charles W. Flanagan High School on Thursday. The win improved the Knights to 6-5 this season.
The flag football team scored two touchdowns this week and now has four on the season, but came up short in both games. Monarch fell 12-0 against Pompano Beach High School and narrowly lost 7-6 to Hollywood Hills High School.
Both the boys and girls tennis teams were swept in their seven matches against Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The water polo team is still searching for its first win of the season after losses to Northeast High School (24-8), Cardinal Gibbons High School (19-4), and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (23-2). Monarch will next face Palm Beach Gardens High School on March 24 at 6:30 p.m.
The track and field team had several standout performances at the BCAA North Preliminaries. Monarch captured first place in the 4 x 400-meter relay behind Bryan Bynes, Isaiah Worthy, Jayden Henry, and Christopher Cortinas.
Cortinas also placed second in the 100 meters, while Worthy finished second in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 meters. Rickenson Bozier took fourth in the discus, while Henry, Sanjae Fisher, Brian Colquhoun, and Worthy placed fourth in another 4 x 400 relay event. The 4×800 relay team added a fifth-place finish.
For the girls’ team, Aliyah Duncan claimed first place in the 100 meters. Kennedi Stephenson, Chelsea Dumas, Jania Cooper, and Duncan placed second in the 4×100 relay. Jasmine Jean-Marie finished third in the discus and fifth in the shot put.
Monarch will also be represented on the international stage as Christopher Cortinas has been selected to compete for Team USA’s 17U flag football team in the Junior Olympics. The multi-sport standout was one of the top receivers last season, recording 21 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns
