It was a busy week for the Monarch High School softball team competing in the Orange Bowl Tournament.
On April 7-9, the Knights beat South Dade High School 10-3 and Coral Glades 5-4 before settling for a 3-3 draw against Pembroke Pines Charter.
Monarch closed the tournament with a 15-3 victory over Barbara Goleman Senior High School in Miami Lakes.
Isabella Castelli made the start in all four games and struck out eight in a pair of complete games. Mia Macaione also pitched four innings and had 13 punch-outs, while Ciera Taylor pitched a clean inning.
Offensively, Ciera Taylor led the team with five RBIs. Camryn Piskun recorded an RBI in all four games, while Mackenzie Foster Sarah Phipps combined to drive in eight. Macaione, Adrianna Zullo, and Amanda Hammel knocked in two, and Emerson Clark had one.
“Getting four games in two days back to back, we started to see a few of our girls making solid contact again,” said Head Coach Kenny Forbes. “With the end of the regular season and the beginning of post-play at our doorstep, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.”
Monarch followed that up with a season-high 16 runs on Tuesday against J.P. Taravella in their 16-1 win to move their record to 9-7-1. Amanda Hammel and Phipps brought in six runs. Macaione had two RBIs, while Kaitlyn Hammel and Foster had one. Castelli and Macaione allowed only one hit on the mound in their win.
The Knights will have a week off before their next game on Wednesday, April 20, at 4:30 against Nova High School on Senior Night. The Titans are 6-4 this year after starting the season.
