Monarch High School celebrated the grand opening of the new Chill Room, a place where special needs students who may be feeling overwhelmed by large crowds of students, overstimulation, or other high school pressures can go and relax.
On January 31, the school held a ribbon cutting attended by Coconut Creek Mayor Sandra Welch, commissioner John Brodie, and school leaders.
Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale donated the interior furnishings of the Chill Room, and volunteers from the Monarch High community helped set up the room. Felicia Davis, who works with special needs students at Monarch and is a member of Calvary Chapel, helped foster the relationship. “People from the church wanted to help us, and we decided this was a way they could do so,” she said.
According to Monarch principal James Cecil, this room will be a positive place for students facing autism and other challenges. “Sometimes students with autism are overwhelmed by large crowds in the hallways or overstimulation. This will be a place they can come and chill,” he said.
Community leaders and students were given a tour of the room. The interior is darkened with soft lighting to create a sense of calmness and relaxation.
