On Tuesday, Margate’s own Vincent Samuel had his signature moment in college with a walk-off hit for the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team against state rival Florida Atlantic University.
With the game tied at two in the bottom of the ninth, Samuel, a 2022 graduate of J.P. Taravella, came up with the bases loaded and nobody out before his game-winning hit went off the wall. Samuel previously had an RBI hit in the game days after hitting his first home run with the Eagles.
The junior started the season off slow and was in and out of the lineup. However, he has raised his batting average by over .100 points in the last few weeks and is now cemented in the middle of the Eagles order.
Samuel played on the varsity baseball team with Head Coach Joe Giummule for two years. He hit .323 with six home runs and 45 RBIs. He also had 16 doubles and one triple before starting his college career at Indian River State College. Samuel had a sensational sophomore season, earning a division I scholarship after homering five times and driving in 41 runs while also hitting .339.
FGCU will play in Jacksonville for a pivotal three-game series in the Atlantic Sun, starting on Friday, March 28, at 6:30 p.m.
