The Margate Jewish community and city leaders celebrated the second day of Chanukah on Thursday with a menorah lighting ceremony.
The Lubavitch Hebrew Academy in Margate hosted the event, which took place across the street from City Hall.
Florida State Senator Tina Polsky, Florida Rep Christine Hunschofsky, and Margate Mayor Arlene Schwartz participated in lighting the candles. At the same time, everyone was treated to Sufganiyot or jelly donuts, a tradition at Chanukah.
Family and friends came together, with adults and teenagers socializing while children played together. “This was amazing. Margate allowed us a place to come together and have a menorah lighting,” said Rabbi Shloime Denburg, executive director of the Hebrew Academy.
“This is awesome,” said Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano. “We love our Jewish community. This is one of the times when the first day of Chanukah and Christmas day happen on the day.”
Hunschofsky said it was beautiful for the community to come together and celebrate Chanukah.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano added, “It is beautiful that the community celebrates Chanukah. Together, we make Margate great.”
Lubavitch Hebrew Academy is located at 1500 North State Road 7, Margate.
