Robert Rockwell, a longtime ham radio operator, was among those honored during the June 17 Margate commission meeting.
The commission recognized members of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Association and the Parrot Amateur Radio Club for Amateur Radio Week, June 22-29, and their work with ham radios.
The members train to provide communications during major emergencies.
“I have been a ham radio operator for 20 years, and I love communicating with people all over the world,” said Rockwell.
Most of the individuals honored are members of both clubs. They study ham radio and build relationships with fellow operators around the world.
They are preparing for a ham radio training event at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach on June 27 and 28, where they will practice their skills and prepare for emergencies.
“I love being a member of Gold Coast and have made some good friends. We can provide important communication during major emergencies such as hurricanes,” said Jeff Stahl of Parkland.
Ham radio is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics, and communication together. For many, it is a fun social activity and a lifeline in emergencies, according to the National Association for Amateur Radio.
