Margate police officers seeking promotions will face new requirements to advance their careers.
During the June 4 meeting, the commission approved an ordinance establishing new requirements for promotion from officer to sergeant and from sergeant to lieutenant.
Chief Michael Palma told the commission that a committee had studied the department’s approach to promotions and recommended changes. During the previous police administration, there were complaints of bias and favoritism.
Officers applying to become sergeants will be evaluated by a written exam, an oral exam, and a review of their personnel file. They will receive points in each area, as well as points for education. A review of the officer’s personnel file will be critical, allowing the administration to determine if the individual has had any problems or received positive evaluations, according to Palma.
Those who are hoping to be promoted from sergeant to lieutenant will not take a written exam but will be interviewed by Palma. They will be evaluated on their leadership abilities and how they handle various situations.
“We want to place our officers in situations where they will be successful,” said Palma.
Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano asked if outside candidates would be considered for the positions. Palma said the promotions will be made in-house.
