Margate Police released dramatic bodycam footage Wednesday of officers chasing down an alleged car thief on foot.
The footage, shared online by the department in a Facebook post, shows the arrest of Devon Williams, 17, of North Lauderdale. Along with an accomplice, Williams allegedly stole a car in the early morning of Dec. 23 in the 5400 block of Southwest 6th Street, police said.
According to police, Williams and his accomplice were driving the stolen vehicle in a Margate neighborhood with the car lights off. Police officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it. Williams then turned down a street without realizing it was a dead end, police said.
Officers caught Williams after a brief foot pursuit. The vehicle he was driving was stolen, and there was a stolen firearm recovered from the car, police said.
Police said they learned of the car burglary after a citizen alerted them.
The second car thief is still being sought by police.
“If you think you can come into Margate and commit crimes without any repercussions, you are WRONG! We are always protecting our community, and our community is always assisting us with that protection,” the police department said in the Facebook post accompanying the arrest video.
