A Margate man is behind bars and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon after strangling and attacking a woman with a metal pole.
On January 6, the Margate Police Department responded to reports of a disturbing domestic violence incident involving serious injury.Â
According to the police report, law enforcement responded to a call from the victim, who detailed a traumatic experience involving an argument that escalated from relationship issues into physical violence in which she was attacked with a pipe.Â
The victim told officers the confrontation began between herself and her boyfriend, later identified as Miguel Perez, 20, of Margate, in the bedroom of the couple’s apartment, where they engaged in an argument over relationship matters.Â
As tensions rose, the victim recanted to officers how Perez allegedly became increasingly agitated, ultimately spitting in the victim’s face multiple times, pushing her on the bed, and strangling her.
The victim said she was able to get away from Perez and left the room. Shortly after that, she returned upon hearing him crying, but upon reentering the room, the victim said that she witnessed him armed with a large metal pole.Â
Before the victim could once again escape, she alleged that Perez swung the pole at her. Defending the attack, the victim told officers she blocked the pole with her arm, sustaining a deep laceration.
According to the victim, if she had not blocked the pole with her arm, it would have struck her head.
The victim told officers that, injured, she exited the home and contacted the police department.Â
Upon arrival and after completing interviews, MPD arrested Perez and transported him to the Broward County Main Jail.
