Christine Coleman loves teaching the latest technology to students at Margate Middle School.
She is a reading teacher during the school day and is developing a robotics club where students learn to design, build, program, and eventually drive a VEX robot.
“This fall, I will start a robotics club at Margate Middle, and I believe there are many students who will want to be a part of it,” said Colman.
She was among a group of Broward County public school teachers who spent four days learning about the latest VEX robotics technology at Pines Collegiate Academy 6–12.
There is a growing number of Broward students participating in robotics clubs, and some are learning professional-level skills. Those who join learn the basics of designing and building a robot, and then they have to program it using block coding. “They learn to solve problems and work together,” said Coleman.
The teachers who serve as robotics coaches spent the week learning about VEX robotics and robotic games that will be used in student competitions during the 2025-2026 school year.
For a final activity, the coaches designed, built, and then drove their robots in a game played on a field that resembled a hockey rink.
