A man was arrested in Margate after allegedly assaulting a woman, climbing onto the hood of her moving car, and later stealing her vehicle before she called 911 from a hospital.
According to a Margate Police Department report, James Glenn Hopper, 19, of Boca Raton, was arrested on February 24 following a verbal argument that turned violent. The report indicated the incident began near 700 Banks Road when the victim, while driving with Hopper in the passenger seat, was elbowed by him in the stomach near the Winfield Boulevard and State Road 7.Â
When the victim told Hopper she was going to call her father and 911, he allegedly reached for her cellphone in the center console to prevent her from calling for help.Â
According to MPD, Hopper then exited the vehicle and climbed onto the hood. The victim drove approximately a quarter of a mile with Hopper on the hood before stopping near the 2900 block of North State Road 7.
Hopper reportedly got back in the vehicle, and the victim drove to HCA Florida Northwest Hospital. Once outside the hospital, Hopper stole the victim’s car keys. The victim sought help from a bystander to call 911. During that time, Hopper drove off in her vehicle, according to the report.
Officers later contacted Hopper and instructed him to return to the scene. When he arrived, he was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.Â
Hopper faces charges of battery, robbery, grand theft of a motor vehicle, and tampering with a witness for allegedly attempting to prevent the victim from contacting law enforcement
Records show he was released after posting a $3,000 bond.Â
