An 80-year-old Margate man may have suffered a medical event that led to his death following a three-car vehicle crash Wednesday, authorities said.
Robert Kirsheman was driving a blue Toyota Camry around 7:50 a.m. when he crashed the car near the 7100 block of Kimberly Boulevard in North Lauderdale, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived, they said Kirsheman appeared to be “incoherent and unresponsive.” North Lauderdale Fire Rescue rushed him to Northwest Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation by detectives showed that Kirsheman had been unconscious while stopped in of traffic, then began to drive south on Rock Island Road, according to BSO.
At the same time, a woman driving a gray Chevrolet Malibu was headed south on Rock Island Road and stopped for a red light at Kimberly Boulevard, authorities said.
Investigators said a third driver in a black Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling west on Kimberly Boulevard and attempting to turn left onto southbound Rock Island Road.
The investigation revealed the front driver’s side of the Kirsheman’s Camry collided with the rear passenger side of the Chevrolet Malibu, causing minor damage, authorities said.
The Camry then continued at a slow speed where it struck the front passenger side of the Hyundai Santa Fe, also causing minor damage, according to investigators.
Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit on Thursday said they believed Kirsheman had possibly suffered a medical event, which caused him to lose control of his Camry.
The detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
