The process of improving the Margate water and wastewater system has begun.
During the February 19 meeting, the commission approved the final reading of an ordinance to issue the first series of bonds not exceeding $60 million. This is part of the $120 million bond voters approved in November.
A $30 million bond will be issued in 2027, and another $30 million will be issued in 2031. The money raised will improve the system’s efficiency, reliability, and quality.
Before the ordinance was approved, Vice Mayor Antonio Arserio said he was glad the city’s voters had chosen to support the bond, which will pay for necessary improvements to the city’s water system. He said a bond is the most efficient way to pay for improvements.
According to Commissioner Anthony Caggiano, the most crucial benefit of the improved water system is that residents won’t have to experience problems such as sewer line breaks. He said the residents are paying so that nothing bad happens with their water.
Over the past year, city staff have made presentations on the importance of renovating the aging water system. According to city information, improvements will be made to the west wastewater treatment plant, including new construction and equipment replacement.
