A man faces attempted murder charges after firing gunshots at two victims and an infant inside the bedroom of a Margate home.
According to records, on October 15, the Margate Police Department received a domestic violence 911 call from victims indicating shots had been fired and the shooter, later identified as Christopher Kirland, 25, of North Lauderdale, had fled.Â
According to the victim, Kirland and one of the victims were engaged in a heated verbal altercation that rapidly turned physical. The victim told officers the assault began with Kirland striking her on the head and in her face before mounting her on their bed and beating her, causing injuries to the side of her lip and her right forearm.
The report indicates the altercation turned even more troubling as the couple’s eight-month-old baby lay on the bed beside the victim. The victim told officers the infant’s cries provided a brief window for her to grab the baby and escape. However, the relief was short-lived as the baby was placed back on the bed, and the physical altercation resumed.
As the dispute escalated, a second victim, observing the altercation, intervened. She physically separated the first victim from Kirland but, in the process, was also injured.Â
As the first victim attempted to stop Kirland from punishing the second victim as he did her, she was open-palm slapped in the face, causing her to fall back several feet and collide with a wall. The impact of the fall was so severe that it also broke a bed headboard.
Following this violent episode, Kirland retreated to a closet in the room, where he retrieved a firearm and racked it, causing a round already in the chamber to be ejected. Victims recounted to officers he walked toward them, pointed the gun at their heads, and fired two consecutive shots, both hitting the wall directly behind them.
After discharging the firearm, the Kirland collected a duffle bag and quickly left the scene before officers arrived. On his way out of the home, he allegedly vandalized surveillance cameras at the front door before escaping.Â
Members of the Special Operations Division apprehended Kirland not far from the home. He refused to cooperate or be interviewed by authorities during the arrest and was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
