A man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary after attacking a relative with a hatchet and seeking refuge from law enforcement in a neighbor’s backyard.
On July 4, the Margate Police Department responded to the scene of an alleged domestic disturbance involving a deadly weapon.
Officers spoke to a victim who claimed that his relative, Nherry Alberto Cius, 24, of Margate, assaulted and threw a hatchet at him as he attempted to escape, according to the police report.
The victim told officers Cius had fled the scene following the attack.
The report stated the victim had noticeable injuries to his mouth and indicated to law enforcement that had he not ducked at the perfect time; the hatchet would have struck him directly in the back of the head, possibly killing him.
The victim was treated by Margate Fire and Rescue on the scene for multiple facial injuries while also clueing officers in on where he believed his son may have fled.
According to the arrest report, police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood to locate Cius. After some time, officers apprehended Cius near his residence as he attempted to leave the area via a car service.
It was later determined that while police were searching for Cius, he entered a neighbor’s backyard to conceal himself and await the arrival of the car service he ordered to flee the scene.
The homeowner advised officers she and her family were inside the home when they witnessed Cius opening their side gate and entering the backyard. Upon review of the home’s security camera footage, Cius can be seen concealing his identity while walking across the backyard along the fence line.
After Cius was taken into custody, a background check revealed he was on probation for past drug charges.
Cius was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
