A Margate man was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after allegedly attacking his daughter with a machete.
On July 21, the Margate Police Department responded to the scene of a reported domestic assault involving a deadly weapon at a residence near the 6600 block of Winfield Boulevard.
Upon arrival, a victim claimed a man, later identified as Jahmel Nerestant, 71, of Margate, had chased her around the home and slashed her with a machete.
According to the arrest report, the confrontation began as the victim, Jahmel’s daughter, was moving her belongings out of his home.
According to the victim, as she was gathering her property, Jahmel became aggressive and belligerent, yelling, “I don’t have a daughter!” while chasing her upstairs while she collected her belongings.
Witnesses told police that Jahmel allegedly retrieved a machete during the confrontation and chased the victim, screaming, “I am going to chop your head off!”
Jahmel allegedly lunged toward the victim, who raised her hands to grab his arm in a last-ditch effort to prevent the machete from striking her.
The victim told officers the machete made contact with her upper right arm, but it did not result in a serious injury.
The witness told officers following the incident, they called the police and waited on the scene.
Jahmel was arrested and transported to the Northwest Medical Center for injuries associated with the violent confrontation.
Upon medical clearance, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $5,000 bond.
