La Union Restaurant in Margate was ordered closed after inspectors documented roaches, flying insects, a strong urine odor, and 44 violations.
Located in Sun Plaza at 998 South State Road 7, the restaurant was ordered closed October 5 following the inspection.
Among the most serious findings was roach activity around the restaurant’s dishwashing area. Inspectors reported live roaches crawling on a wall and shelves surrounding the three-compartment sink.
Several dead roaches were also documented. Inspectors also reported a buildup of roach droppings along shelves and a wall in the dishwashing area.
Inspectors found flying insects throughout the restaurant, including landing on dirty and clean dishes in the dishwashing area and on walls in the dining room near a large puddle of standing water.Â
The inspection also documented a black or green mold-like substance inside the restaurant’s ice machine. Food safety issues led to stop-sale orders for multiple items held above the required 41 degrees.
Inspectors also found raw chicken thawing at room temperature and a bucket of raw chicken stored on the floor. Inspectors found raw eggs stored above cooked plantains and raw chicken stored above raw steak. The restaurant corrected both storage issues during the inspection.
The restaurant also initially lacked adequately hot running water at its three-compartment sink before the operator relit the hot water heater.Â
Inspectors also noted heavy grease and food debris on cooking equipment, missing or damaged kitchen floor tiles containing food and standing water, a strong urine odor in a restroom, and standing water in the customer dining area.
The October 5 inspection ordered the restaurant closed pending corrective action and a follow-up inspection.
