An eight-year-old boy has undergone multiple surgeries after being bitten several times in an incident involving two Pit bulls in a Margate home Wednesday, officials said.
The incident happened shortly before noon in the 5000 block of South Lakewood Circle. The child was bitten several times and sustained severe injuries before being airlifted by Broward Sheriff’s Office air rescue to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, according to a Margate city spokesperson.
Authorities said the boy has undergone several surgeries since the attack and is scheduled for another surgery on Friday. There is currently no timeframe for his release from the hospital.
Several dogs were inside the home at the time of the incident, but only two — both Pit bulls — were involved in the incident. The dogs’ owner signed them over to animal control, and officials confirmed both animals have since been euthanized.
The two dogs belonged to a family member who lives elsewhere. The canines had been temporarily at the residence for less than a day or so, authorities said.
Authorities said the reason for the attack remains unknown.
