In the season’s biggest races, North Broward Prep and Monarch High School had multiple teams compete in District Championships.

North Broward Prep Cross Country

With the top eight teams advancing in Districts, North Broward Prep edged Pompano Beach High School out for the final spot. NBP had three runners finish in the top 50, led by Wills Gillis at 18:16.72 to come in 21st.

Eric Levy, Patrick McBrien, and Noah Rivers followed him. Joseph Rondon finished in 58th, while Luke Diamond, Max Maltzen, and Lester Hooker also ran for the Eagles.

“This has been a great season,” said Head Coach Chris Wood. “We’ve gone from just showing up and trying to get workouts in and minimal expectations to a program that actually expects success. This postseason run is about the experience and setting North Broward prep cross country up for the future.”

While the girls’ team finished 12th and did not qualify, they still received tremendous performances from Leila Lacho, Chenxi Wu, Megan Tennant, Katherine Heggernick, Marina Newcomb, and Camilla Hooker.

Monarch Cross Country

Monarch had only one player advance to Regionals, Katrice Burke. She finished 27th overall with a time of just over 24 minutes.

While she is qualified for States in track and field as a freshman, Burke reached Regionals in cross country for the first time.

“This multifaceted athlete can do just about anything when she is given the right guidance,” said Head Coach Dione Hester. “I look forward to seeing what she will accomplish by the end of the school year.”

Maxwell Chevy and Kaylee Isen also ran for the Knights.

Monarch Swim

After competing in Districts, the Monarch High School swim team will send several swimmers to regionals.

The boys’ team has three relay teams set to compete with Andrei Reyna-Maitiut, Brayden Spalluto, Vinicius Camargo, and Ryan Davis in the 200-yard medley relay. Reyna-Maitiut, Camargo, Daniel Piniero, and Ryan Davis swim in the 200-yard freestyle, while Spalluto, Sebastian Cardozo, Piniero, and Davis will race in the 400-yard freestyle.

Individually, Spalluto won a District Championship in the 100-yard breaststroke and will also compete in the 200-yard freestyle. The girls’ 200-yard medley relay team that advanced consists of Gabriela Bolivar, Anabel Holt, Joesselynn Zapata, and Lisette Renta. Ava Martinez, Gabriella Bolivar, and Renta will all compete in multiple individual races.

Next, the Knights swim team will compete in Regionals on Wednesday, Oct 26, at Coral Springs Aquatic Center, while the cross country runners will be in action in Regionals on Thursday, Oct 27, at South County Regional Park.
