Margate Police are preparing to host their annual National Night Out event on August 4 at the Sports Complex.
During the June 3 meeting, the commission approved a resolution to partially fund the event with up to $70,000 from the State Law Enforcement Trust Funds.
Margate Police Chief Michael Palma recommended the funding because National Night Out promotes community involvement in crime prevention and neighborhood spirit between police and the community. It also encourages camaraderie in the fight for safer streets, according to city information.
The event is in its initial planning stages and will include activities for children and youth. Palma said a goal is to promote safe neighborhood activities and neighborhood watch, with giveaways.
In previous years, Margate’s National Night Out has been a large event with police and K-9 demonstrations, carnival-style games, bounce houses, and other family activities.
Last year, the Broward Sheriff’s Office participated and showed some of its vehicles. State and federal law enforcement agencies have also participated, providing information on how they serve the public and other opportunities available to the public. The city also provided free hot dogs.
National Night Out is free to the public.
