A school security guard was arrested after investigators said he drew a rifle at a driver during a heated confrontation while directing school traffic.
According to a Margate Police Department arrest report, Karone Christopher Brown, 30, of Margate, was working security at Lubavitch Hebrew Academy on March 23 when an altercation unfolded as parents exited the campus parking lot onto Northwest 15th Street.Â
Brown told police he was attempting to ease congestion around the school when a driver’s SUV continued inching forward despite his efforts to control traffic. He claimed the vehicle eventually bumped his knee and said he later approached the driver but never pointed his rifle at him, maintaining he carried the firearm in a “low-ready” position for safety reasons.
The driver, however, provided a much different account.
According to investigators, the driver said Brown became enraged during the encounter, allegedly yelling, “Are you crazy?” and “I’ll fucking kill you” before walking to the driver’s side window and pointing a rifle directly at his face.Â
The driver told police he felt as though he was “looking down the barrel of the gun” and feared he was about to be shot.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from both Lubavitch Hebrew Academy and a nearby business. Police said one video showed Brown repeatedly stepping in front of the vehicle as traffic backed up, while another allegedly captured him pointing a firearm at the driver and later drawing the weapon again as the motorist attempted to leave the area.
The victim parked across the street and called 911, later telling investigators he feared for his life and had experienced trouble sleeping since the incident.
After reviewing the video evidence and witness statements, investigators concluded Brown had threatened the driver by pointing the firearm and making statements that placed the victim in fear of imminent violence. Detectives noted that Brown’s position as an armed security guard gave him the apparent ability to carry out those threats.
Brown was subsequently charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.Â
Court records indicate he was not arrested at the scene and that the case was later forwarded to the Broward State Attorney’s Office for prosecution. On June 5, he was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
