9 Hospitalized With Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Margate

Five adults and four children were hospitalized with possible carbon monoxide poisoning in Margate Thursday, officials said.

The Margate Fire Department responded to a call about an unresponsive person at 4955 Southwest 5th Ct. around 2:30 a.m., Fire Chief Roberto Lorenzo said.

Crews found a gas generator being used inside the home. Lorenzo said they quickly ventilated the house and began evacuating all residents.

All nine patients were taken to local hospitals and were listed in stable condition, according to Lorenzo.

Carbon monoxide, or CO, is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. According to federal data, more than 150 people in the U.S. die every year from accidental, non-fire-related CO poisoning associated with consumer products, including generators.
