A woman is facing multiple felony charges after investigators determined she knowingly deposited a stolen check and withdrew over $20,000.
A Margate Police Department arrest report indicates that the incident started when Bank United informed authorities about a stolen check for $20,380.83.
The check, mailed from the victim’s address on April 18, was meant for Mullins Lumber.
Records show that the check was later found to have been cashed by a woman, later identified as Ann Pierre, 21, of Boca Raton, into her Chase Bank account. MPD records do not indicate if Pierre was an employee of Mullins Lumber or if, somehow, another way stole the check.
After the deposit, the funds were withdrawn in cash over several days. A subpoena of the Chase Bank account revealed that Pierre was the sole account holder and authorized signer.
Upon investigation into the theft, Pierre was contacted and interviewed on August 28. She reportedly admitted that the stolen check was deposited into her account and acknowledged that the funds were withdrawn in cash.
Pierre also admitted she did not report the fraudulent activity to the bank and had provided her bank card to a coworker before the deposit. She also claimed the coworker advised her to refrain from checking the account balance.
Further investigation revealed that Pierre had transferred $17,000 of her savings to a friend’s bank account shortly before the deposit. That money was returned to her account after the stolen funds were withdrawn, raising suspicions of an attempt to conceal the fraudulent activity.
MVP Construction’s owner, whose name appeared on the stolen check, decided to press charges.
On November 6, Pierre was arrested and charged with felony grand theft and defrauding a financial institution of over $20,000.
Pierre was later released after posting a $5,200 bond.
