A routine traffic stop by the Margate Police Department led to a life-or-death struggle and the arrest of a Lauderdale Lakes man on charges of battery of a police officer.
According to MPD records, the traffic stop occurred on August 30 near the 1700 block of South State Road 7.
The incident began when officers observed a vehicle traveling with illegal window tint.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer noted that none of the windows were lowered, obscuring the visibility of its interior and occupants. The officer gave the driver a loud verbal command to lower the windows.
Records show a male voice, later identified as Khari Brown, 47, of Lauderdale Lakes, responded from within the vehicle, claiming, “I am retired law enforcement, and we don’t have to roll down any other windows.”
Sensing a lack of cooperation, the officer requested backup.
Brown became increasingly agitated as the officer attempted to communicate with the driver. He repeatedly stated he was a “retired federal agent” and insisted it was within their rights not to lower the windows. The officer reminded Brown of the necessity for law enforcement to see inside the vehicle, particularly during a traffic stop.
According to law enforcement, the situation escalated further when he asked if there were any firearms in the vehicle, and Brown confirmed he had one. The officer instructed him to keep his hands visible on the dashboard, but Brown continued to argue and remove his hands from the dashboard.
Concerned for safety, the officer ordered Brown to exit the vehicle to disarm him during the traffic stop. Brown refused to comply, leading the officer to attempt to physically remove him from the car.
Records show Brown resisted arrest, pulling away and tensing his arms. During the struggle, another officer removed a handgun from Brown’s waistband while another officer retrieved a knife from his right pocket.
At one point, Brown made a sudden movement towards the driver’s side center console area, prompting fears he might be reaching for another weapon. Officers attempted to use a Taser on Brown twice, but the attempts were ineffective.
With the assistance of additional responding officers and deputies, Brown was eventually pulled from the vehicle.
Despite continued resistance, officers managed to place him in handcuffs. However, during the struggle, Brown struck one of the deputies, causing bodily harm.
Brown was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. He was later released after posting a $3,000 bond.
