Planet Fitness Launches High School Summer Pass Program to Combat Teen Obesity and Boost Mental Health

To tackle the concerning rates of teen obesity, mental health struggles, and lack of energy among American adolescents, Planet Fitness has launched the High School Summer Pass program. 

The initiative aims to provide high school students aged 14 to 19 with free access to over 2,400 Planet Fitness locations nationwide, including at 5470 W Sample Rd in Margate, and empower them to prioritize their physical and mental well-being during the summer break.

Recent data reveals alarming statistics about the health and wellness of American teens. In Florida alone, 14.7 percent of teenagers are classified as obese, while 12.9 percent are considered overweight. Furthermore, 61 percent of U.S. teens grapple with various mental health challenges, underscoring the need for comprehensive support systems.

According to a survey conducted by Planet Fitness, two out of three American teens (66 percent) admit to struggling with energy levels throughout the day. Additionally, 61 percent of respondents reported generally having difficulty staying energized. 

Recognizing the importance of fitness in combating these issues, 93 percent of U.S. teens expressed appreciation for the positive impact physical activity can have on their lives, potentially leading to healthier lifestyles in adulthood.

The High School Summer Pass program offers a safe and judgment-free environment where teenagers can exercise and improve their well-being. By providing free gym access from May 15 to August 31, Planet Fitness aims to bridge the gap left by the absence of school-based physical education, sports, and extracurricular activities during the summer break.

Planet Fitness will feature stories of participating teens and their experiences in articles to promote the program and highlight its impact. Moreover, five individuals from across the country will be awarded individual academic scholarships worth $10,000 each. 

To enter the contest, students are encouraged to submit TikTok videos, tagging @planetfitness and using the hashtags #contest and #HSSP23US to describe their High School Summer Pass experience until August 31.

In a new addition to the program this year, the top five schools with the highest number of student sign-ups on the Leaderboard will collectively receive $50,000 in funds. These funds can be used to enhance athletic equipment, renovate sports fields, organize physical fitness classes, and develop health and wellness initiatives within the schools.
