North Broward Prep Basketball Teams Make Historic Run to Regional Final

It was an incredible run for both the North Broward Prep basketball teams. 

The girls team had their best season in over a decade, reaching the Regional Final before falling to Cardinal Gibbons High School. The Eagles went 22-7 this year, which was the most win they have had in school history. They also won the Windermere Prep Holiday Classic, five playoff wins, and their second District Championship in school history. 

Leading the way for NBP was senior Riley Weiss, who averaged 28.8 points per game. She finished the season as the all-time leader with 806 points and had the first 50-point game in school history, knocking down 91 three-pointers this year.Weiss also had a school record 12 steals in a game, nine three pointers, and the highest free throw percentage at 85 percent. 

Alexa Schwartz also had a historic season, recording the first triple-double in school history, averaging 11.1 points per game, seven rebounds, and six assists. She set the school record for most assists in game with 14 and most in a season with 176. Kaydie Sturm also averaged just under ten points per game. 

Meadow Henningsen and Kylie Cohen were the two other seniors on the team. At the same time, Mia Meldung, Samantha Edelson, Makena Longo, Gemma Clouse, Ellie Scheckner, Marissa Krumholz, Ella Rosen, Jiayi Zhou, and Ana Abelleira are all set to return next season.

The boys basketball team also made the Regional Final before falling to Mater Lakes Academy. They won their first District Championship over Somerset Academy in 19 years after finishing with a record of 22-8 and beat them in the Regional Semifinals, then went 2-1 in the Sun Bash Tournament this year. 

The Eagles’ leading scorer was Ryan Weiss, who scored just over 15 points per game and set the school record with 86 three pointers made. Enrico Borio averaged a double-double, while NBP got terrific play from Raul Perez Ruiz, Ben Daniels, Junxi Yang, Alex Wigginton, and Dylan Hoffman in the playoffs.

The other seniors on the team are Myles Samuels, Zach Kaplan, Ju Zhou, and Ben Bullock, while Ian Astiazarain, Pavle Djeric, and Lucas Secches will return next year. They will also get a boost from the junior varsity team as well after they went 14-2 this year.
