Monarch Football Wins 2nd Straight District Championship; Swim Sends 8 to Regionals

The Monarch High School team secured their second straight and third District Championship in school history following their 48-0 win on Thursday.

It was also Senior Night for the Knights, who honored Kevin Powell, Clayton Cannon II, Isiah Thomas, Emmanuel Laved, AJ Hairston, Treyvon Washington, Terrell Lo-Ray, Jeffrey Wright, Robert Woods, Josh Doerfler, Landon Bolding, Keaton Fernandez, Malik Kelsey, Malik Young, Mark Harris, Leonard Ester, LJ Muff, Naijul Lawrence, Demarcus Pierce, Trey Driscoll, Zachary Driscoll, Logan CoehloGabriel Birnbaum, Aidan Schwartz, Melvin Puckett, Adin Lin and Holden Zeltner.

Jack Spader led the way with three touchdown passes. He threw for 225 yards, while Hairston also returned from injury and threw for 201 yards and a score. Reed, Jabari Brady, and Clayton Cannon II all finished with at least 100 recieving yards, with Demarcus Pearce adding 90 yards on the ground.

The Knights head into the postseason with a record of 8-2. They reached the Regional Semifinals last year and will look to make a run to a State Championship. The junior varsity team finished their season and beat Marjory Stoneman Douglas 28-12.

Monarch High School’s swim team competed in the District Tournament on Thursday and had the boys team placed fifth while the girls came in seventh.

The Knights had four relays teams advance to Regionals with Andrei-Reyna Matiut, Vinicius Camargo, Samuel Lara Cuadro, and Arthur Meneghin in the 200-yard medley and 200-yard free for the boys while Gabriella Bolivar, Mariana Bolivar, Ava Trotman and Josselynn Zapata did the same for the girls.

Overall, the boys finished with 131 points, with Matiut advancing in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly after finishing third and fifth, respectively. The girls had 96 points, with Mariana advancing individually, finishing fifth in the 500-yard freestyle and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle. Gabriella placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle.

Next, both teams will compete in Regionals on November 4, looking to secure their spot in the State Championship.
