Monarch Football Wins 1st Playoff Game: Soccer Teams Begin Season

Monarch athletics was in full swing, with the football team competing in their first playoff game while the varsity soccer teams kicked off their season.

The football team recorded a 40-7 win over Marjory Stoneman Douglas to advance to the second round.

A.J. Hairston threw for 313 yards with four touchdowns, with Jabari Brady catching a pair. Samari Reed and Brite Cannon also caught touchdown passes, while Demarcus and Malik Kesley had rushing scores to help Monarch improve to 9-2 this year. Brady and Reed became the first Monarch players to record over 1,000 yards with ten touchdowns. Gabriel Birnbaum added 3.5 more sacks and has 20.5 this season. 

The Knights are set to face Santaluces High School on Friday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Chiefs went 7-3 in the regular season, and Palm Beach Gardens High School 35-28 on Friday. 

The boys soccer team, coming off a District Championship in 2022, started their season with a 1-0 win over Deerfield Beach High School on October 6, with Atilla Kovacs scoring the lone goal. The Knights then beat Pompano Beach High School 2-1 on Wednesday, with Kovacs scoring again and Matthew Pereira recording the game-winning goal before losing 1-0 on Monday against South Plantation High School.

“We are just trying to get into a rhythm and see what lineups work best for us, but the best is definitely yet to come.” Head Coach Erick Swickle said. 

The rest of the team consists of Alexander Jimenez, Santiago Arrijola, Jaden Chin, Brandon Aramaal, Gabe Lana, Luka McCluskey, Luca Napoleone, Jose Comella, Ruddy Augusto, Albert DeOliveira, Tony Dos Santos, Samuel Costa, Vicor Bastos, Jack Steinbruckner, Steve Moodie Jr., Diego Barrera, Sebastian Murillo, Luca Lopez, Gustavo Game, Ygor Rebello, Aaron Florian, Aaron Lagombra, Marco Tuesta, Juan Marmolejo, Yan De Franca, Isaiah Bryan and Victor Ramos.

The girls soccer team opened their season with an 8-0 with over Deerfield Beach High School, with Emily Sarria scoring two goals and recording two assists. Rachel King scored once and had two assists, while Amanda Dasilva, Aba Britto, and Kearstin Iadorala scored once, with Kaitlyn Deal registering an assist. Monarch then lost 4-2 on Wednesday against Pompano Beach High School, with Sarria and Britto scoring and Sarah Hernandez adding an assist.

The team consists of Amanda DaSilva, Giula Anjos, Naomi Torres, Hannah Castro, Camila Fajarado, Isabella Gongora, Marcela Xavier, Julie Gabiatti, Camila Decarvalho, Katy Ferratti, Madisyn Pugh, Cle Emmanuel, Samantha Dean, Alina Natal, Angelino Pirolo, Natalie Abiri and Eva Bedell.

Next, both teams are set to play Blanche Ely High School on Wednesday, November 15. The girls will play at 4 p.m. while the boys will compete at 5 p.m. The cheerleading team also began their season in a completion at West Broward High School after the team won Regionals and went to States last season.
