Monarch High School had a busy week of athletics at the start of the new year, featuring basketball, soccer, cheerleading, and wrestling.
The boys basketball team opened the new year with a 57-49 against West Broward High School to improve to 6-7 this year. Cody Dinnall led the team with 16 points, Jamir Davis had 11, and Samari Reed had 10. Next, they will play Northeast High School on Tuesday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. The Hurricanes are 10-4 this year and beat Everglades High School 75-47 in their last game.
The girls basketball team fell against West Broward High School and will play Northeast High School in their next game on Tuesday, January 16, at 6 p.m. The Hurricanes come into the game with a record after winning 13 games a season ago.
Coming off a pair of District Championships, the boys soccer team beat Piper High School 6-1 on January 8. Ruddy Augusto scored two goals, while Luca Napoleone, Steve Moodie Jr., Diego Barrera, and Luca Lopez had one. Moodie and Luka McClsukey combined for four assists, while Alexander Jimenez had five saves. Victor Ramos made three before the Knights played to a 2-2 draw against Coral Springs High School on January 10.
The girls soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Piper, with Isabella Gongora scoring the lone goal in the game on an assist from Rachel King. Kaitlyn Deal also tallied six shots, with Camryn Piskun making six saves, but Monarch fell 2-1 against Coral Springs High School in their last game, with Emily Sarria scoring the team’s only goal.
Next, both soccer teams will play Coral Glades on Tuesday, January 16, with the girls playing at 4 p.m. and the boys at 6 p.m.
The girls wrestling team shined in a tournament at Palmetto Ridge High in Naples. Payton Moyer, a state qualifier from last year, finished in first place, while Abby Moyer came in third and Rosie Kleinne finished fourth.
“I have high expectations for my girls that wrestled this weekend,” Head Coach Troy Yarbrough said. “These girls are all in, and they practice year-round. I expect all three to qualify for states this year.”
Next, Monarch will compete in Immokalee on Saturday, January 20.
The cheerleading team competed in the District Championship on Saturday in the co-ed division and faced Western, Coral Springs Charter, and Charles W. Flanagan High School. They will focus on Regionals at Dillard High School on Friday, January 19.
