Monarch and Coconut Creek High School had nearly a dozen teams competing in the District and Regional Championship this month.
The boys’ volleyball team reached the final of the District Championship. After going 8-1 in the regular season and having their only loss coming against Deerfield Beach, the Knights got their revenge with a win after the Bucks knocked out Coconut Creek High School in the opening round in five sets before falling against Calvary Christian Academy in four sets on May 2. Monarch then entered Regionals as the sixth seed but lost to Fort Lauderdale High School in four sets on May 9.
The Knights won their opening playoff game against Spanish River Community High School on May 1 in baseball. Hunter Nelson, Adriel Gonzalez, and Jake Ramaglia knocked in two runs. At the same time, Lyonel Barthelemy, Colin Aube, Jake Mitarotonda, and Giovanni Mastrorosa had RBIs, with Mercado recording the win with a five-inning complete game.
They fell in the District Semifinals to the reigning two-time State Champions in Marjory Stoneman Douglas on May 10. The two teams got to play again in Regionals, with MSD winning 14-1 to end the Knights season. Mercado had two hits, including a home run off Christian Rodriguez.
Monarch’s softball team won their first playoff game against West Boca Raton Community High School on May 2 with their third biggest offensive game. The Knights won 13-3, highlighted by two RBIs from Sarah Phipps, Faith Linderman, and Mia Macaione. Adrianna Zullo, Camryn Piskun, Mackenzie Foster, and Sara Connor knocked in one, with Macaione recording the win on the mound. She allowed three runs in four innings before Elena Ramirez pitched two hitless innings in relief.
Their run ended after falling 6-1 against Fort Lauderdale High School on May 3, but qualified for Regionals. However, they lost against Cooper City 4-3 in 11 innings on May 11.
Monarch boys track, and field faced J.P. Taravella, Coral Springs High School, Fort Lauderdale, Piper, Coral Glades, and Deerfield Beach, with the Knights coming in seventh with 24 points.
Dominic Savio, Mark Harris, Daniel Robinson, and Jabari Brady had the top result, coming in fourth in the 4 x 400 relay for the track and field at Regionals on May 4. Brady led the way individually with a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters. He also came in sixth in the 100 meters, with Dominic Savio, Daniel Robinson, Shavar Lambkin, and Jaidhen Beaubrun all in the top eight.
The girls also finished sixth, with Saniah Whyte, Zykeria Rutledge, Princess Greene, and Courtney Johnson in fifth in the 4 x 100 meters. Rutledge and Johnson also placed fifth individually, with Zykeria Rutledge, Saniah Whyte, and Riley Cockreham, Princess Greene coming in sixth in the 4 x 100 relay. Rutledge, Saha Rodriguez, and Sariah Augusma all came in seventh. Johnson went on to finish 11th in Regionals.
For Coconut Creek, the baseball team lost their District Playoff Game against South Fork on May 1. The Cougars went 5-8-1 in the regular season before having their season end in the playoffs.
Facing Dillard, Northeast, Atlantic (Delray), South Fork, Boyd Anderson, Boynton Beach, Blanche Ely, Jensen Beach, and Suncoast High School, the boys’ team from Coconut Creek finished sixth in track and field.
Godosn Sinelien finished second in the 200 meters and javelin as well as fourth in the 100 meters. He was also a part of the 4 x 100 relay team that placed third with Jermaine Gordan, Joshua Yearby, and Weds Mathurin. They then went on to qualify for the State Tournament after an incredible job in Regionals.
Juan Carlos Arocho and Hyajah Miller finished fourth in the discus and 100 meters, respectively, with Yearby in the top seven in two events.
The girls finished seventh, with Beriah Fevrier coming in fourth in the javelin. They also placed fourth in Selene Adams, Jalen Bennet, Janelle Bennett, and Jayda Washington in the 4 x 100 relay.
Stephaine Bien-Amie, Ruth-ann Powell, Kahlia Exantus, and Amira Robillard also finished fourth in the 4 x 800 relay. Amira Robillard, Jayda Washington, Jalen Bennet. Washington, Kahlia Exantus, Amira Robillard, and Beriah Fevrier also shined.
