911 Call Leads to Arrest of Margate Woman Accused of Threatening Roommate With Knife, Spitting on Officers

A Margate woman is facing multiple felony charges after police say she threatened a man with a knife during a dispute and later spat on a law enforcement officer while in custody.

According to a Margate Police Department report, Melissa Kathryn Nesbit, 35, was taken into custody on February 26 following a disturbance at a residence located near the 300 block of Southwest 61st Avenue.

According to a complaint affidavit, officers responded to the home around 1:00 a.m. in response to a 911 call indicating Nesbit had come to the home to retrieve personal belongings but began taking items that did not belong to her, leading to an argument with other roommates.

During the dispute, Nesbit allegedly went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, held it above her head in a threatening manner, and approached a man while stating she would stab him. The man reportedly stopped the attack by arming himself with a metal pipe while someone at the home called 911.

Witnesses also told police that Nesbit had been damaging property inside the residence prior to officers’ arrival, including kicking a hole in a door.

Based on the investigation, Nesbit was arrested on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and criminal mischief. While being processed later at the Nancy J. Cotterman Center in Oakland Park, Nesbit allegedly kicked and spat at officers. She was additionally charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.

According to the report, Nesbit was Baker Acted and later transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

Court records show she is being held without bond pending a magistrate hearing.
