A 69-year-old Margate man died after being struck by a Broward County school bus at a school district bus lot, authorities said.
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives identified the pedestrian as Alfred Desmandes.
According to investigators, the school bus was parked at gas pumps on the east side of a building Wednesday morning. The driver, Steven Becker, left the pumps and made a U-turn to travel west through the parking lot as Desmandes walked southwest toward the building.
Becker told investigators he did not see Desmandes crossing the parking lot because the lot’s lights were not illuminated. Desmandes entered the bus’s path and was struck by its front driver’s side, detectives said.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Desmandes to Broward Health North with life-threatening injuries.
The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office notified detectives Thursday, Sept. 10, that Desmandes had died at the hospital.
Investigators said neither excessive speed nor impairment is believed to have contributed to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
