The City of Margate held a sandbag giveaway at Oriole Park on Saturday to help residents prepare for hurricanes and severe weather.
On Saturday, the city’s public works department placed 1,000 filled sandbags in Oriole Park’s parking lot and handed out bags to residents. Those who wanted them could drive up, and public works staff would place them in their cars.
Giovanni Batista, public works director, said the city was distributing sandbags as part of its hurricane preparation program. According to him, if a major storm or flood occurs, residents can place sandbags in front of their doors to prevent water from entering their homes.
Vice Mayor Arlene Schwartz attended the event. “We hope nobody needs these bags, but we want people to be prepared in case of a hurricane,” she said.
Mayor Tommy Ruzzano said, “This is awesome. Margate does a great job in helping residents prepare for hurricane season.”
