Margate Could Lose $14 Million if Property Tax Amendment Is Approved

On November 3, Florida voters will choose whether to approve an amendment to greatly reduce taxes on homesteaded properties.

If approved, the amendment would exempt all homesteaded properties up to $150,000 of the assessed value on January 1, 2027, and $250,000 starting on January 1, 2028, according to state of Florida information.

This will mean a significant hit to Margate’s finances. There will be budget reductions, service level cuts, and user fee increases. The anticipated revenue shortfall is projected at $14 million, according to Lisa Huriash, public information officer.
