Let’s throw away the notion that the Woodlands was ever a retirement community and embrace our new normal: We are now a community where many young couples have discovered as a great place to raise a family.
Based on new numbers from our Parent’s Group, the Woodlands has over 113 children.
And those are only the ones that we’ve found in this community of 893 homes.
I’m always meeting neighbors with children that have no idea that we had a Parents Group, and that the Woodlands have both a Halloween and Holiday party each year.
Unfortunately, our residents don’t participate in the old tradition of trick-or treating.
Trick-or-Treating isn’t anything new. It’s been a tradition in our country since the late 1950s. One of the biggest problems I hear from many parents is that no one participates in trick-or-treating in the Woodlands. Our families have to go to other communities because many residents either do not give out candy, or parents assume that the children do not trick-or-treat here and don’t even stick around on Halloween night.
The past two years, my daughter has been going over to my in-laws neighborhood in Plantation where the homes are almost as old as the homes here. Since their community was never was “adult-only,” trick-or-treating is just as prevalent now as it was in the 1970’s.
The best thing we as adults can do for the children in in the Woodlands is to give them great memories. I’m sure many of us remember the days when we set out in our own neighborhood and knocked on doors asking for candy. I have great memories dressing up and visiting all the homes on my block with a pillowcase in hand saying, “Trick or Treat!”
At the end of the evening, I would empty my pillowcase and dump out tons of candy. It was like winning the lottery….the candy lottery!
Why should our own community be any different?
Let’s make some good memories for our next generation and pass out candy one evening each year.
Halloween is Wednesday, October 31st. Who wants to join in and have our children stay in the Woodlands and trick-or-treat in the Woodlands?
If you do, please post a Halloween decoration on your front door and turn on all your outdoor lights on Halloween night. You can also let us know if you’d like to participate so children will come knock on your door. It’s a great way to meet your neighbors.
