Emotions continue to run high over the redevelopment of the old Carolina Golf Club.
During the August 20 meeting, Commissioner Tommy Ruzzano continued to oppose the construction of large apartment buildings on the land in the Commission Comments. He wants the land to remain mostly open space.
“The residents don’t want a large development there, and we should not put a large development there,” he said.
Vice Mayor Antonio Arserio advocated for the proposed housing complex, believing it will benefit the local community. He said the proposal includes plenty of open green space, walking trails, and lakes. He believes the developer might even build fewer housing units on the land.
Commissioner Anthony Caggiano had little to say, citing concerns that extensive comments on the project would invite legal problems for the city, and therefore, he refrained from commenting. This drew a heated response from Ruzzano, who suggested that Caggiano should share his point of view on the project.
About 900 members of Keep Margate Green are fighting the rezoning that would enable the large development. Juli Van Der Meulen, a leader of the group, spoke at the meeting and said the land should remain an open space.
Additional meetings have been scheduled with residents to discuss the Carolina redevelopment plans and provide an update. The in-person meetings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, August 25 and 26, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Springs Clubhouse, 3131 Holiday Springs Blvd. The format will be flexible and open. People will be able to come and go, ask questions, and discuss their concerns, according to Allen Kopelman, an opponent of the proposed development.
