After another record-setting season for the North Broward Prep baseball team, Yoel Tejada Jr. became the first player selected from the Eagles in this year’s MLB Draft after being selected with the 560th pick in the 19th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While he has yet to make decision on his future, Tejada calls this one of the best moments of his life.
“Obviously it was a dream come true,” Tejada said. “Now I have to make a decision for what I want to do for my future but it was a great honor to hear my name called and have a life-changing experience.”
This year, Tejada shined as a two-way player, helping NBP win their second straight State Championship. On the mound, he went 9-0 and had a 1.82 era. Offensively, he hit .360 with four home runs and 20 RBIs. Tejada also hit a grand slam and a walk-off home run in the District Final against Coral Springs Charter.
Tejada has committed to playing college baseball at the University of Florida next season and has until August 15 to decide between college or playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“It’s a great feeling for a kid that I have seen grow up and become one of the best players in the world,” said Head Coach Brian Campbell. ” I’m super proud of Yoel and his family. Whatever decision he makes, I’ll be super proud of him.”
