If you live on or near a canal you have probably seen it regularly maintained thanks to the City of Tamarac. For the past three years, the city has taken over maintenance of the canals after a long contract expired in which the WHOA was responsible for these, as well as other common areas.
A little bit of history: Back in 1991 a contract was signed between the City of Tamarac and the Woodlands Country Club which stated the club would maintain the landscaping at the front entrance, fountain, Woodlands Boulevard and all the canals. At the time of the agreement, the club believed that they could do a better job beautifying the area than the city, which at the time, was not doing a great job of landscaping other city streets and medians.
For 20 years, the homeowners association and the country club shared the maintenance costs, which was passed down to the residents. Before the city took over, Lake Masters was servicing our canals and was overseen by former resident and board member Harold Grossman. When the lakes got weedy, residents would give Harold a call, and in turn, he would contact Lake Masters.
Since the city of Tamarac has been maintaining the Woodlands canals, they have looked pristine, and plant growth which impedes the flow in the canals, are now removed.
The City of Tamarac lake management department is under the Public Works Director Jack Strain and services our canals as well as others all over Tamarac. All of this is now included in our property taxes and does not come out of our monthly or annual maintenance payments.
