Those who love to hit or kick a bag or achieve peak physical condition may want to consider working out at Rock Box.
The gym, recently opening at 3360 NW 62nd Avenue in Margate, offers regular boxing and kickboxing. It also has tear-shaped 100-pound bags and 150-pound cylinder-shaped bags.
According to David Glass, owner of Rock Box, members can participate in functional fitness. The coaches teach people the proper techniques to punch or kick a bag, but there is no sparring.
“People who go through our training could defend themselves, if necessary. Boxing is a good way to work off stress by hitting a bag,” said Glass.
Members can also work toward general fitness. Ten workout stations are available, where they complete various exercises and watch a video on proper technique. Free weights and weighted balls are also available.
According to Glass, some may want to lose weight, while others want to improve strength, build muscle, tone up, or make a lifestyle change.
Carlos Ugas, an experienced trainer and boxer, will show members the proper techniques for completing various exercises.
“I want to help people achieve their fitness goals and use the proper exercise techniques. It takes effort, but we help people develop their muscles,” said Ugas.
The atmosphere at Rock Box is encouraging and fun. During workout classes, music plays, and members sometimes dance through the workouts. “We say this is where the fight club meets the nightclub,” said Glass, adding that he wants to create a positive vibe during the sessions. “I want to encourage people. Sometimes, if I think a person can achieve more, I will ask them to push themselves more. I want this to be a positive atmosphere.”
Rock Box has a pleasant social atmosphere. Members talk to one another during workouts and sometimes hang out together after a session. People are friendly to one another. According to Glass, they go to restaurants and even entertainment events together.
Rock Box is a new gym; many members have come from other closed kickboxing gyms.
“People like to kickbox, and many are eager to come here so they can continue it,” said Glass.
